Agitation - another important part of the cleaning cycle Agitation, or, as some people call it, Mechanical Action, can play a major part in most cleaning jobs, but only if it is applied correctly. There are many different agitating tools available including towels, micro-fibre cloths, pads, natural or synthetic brushes, rotary and cylindrical brush machines, all of which can be used by the discriminating technician to achieve a variety of results. Carpet cleaning benefits greatly from correctly applied agitation, especially in areas of high soiling. Dramatic improvement can be evident, not only in the appearance of the cleaned carpet but also in the time taken to accomplish that result. One of the first creations was Traffic Lane Cleaner where it was clear that 10 minutes of dwell time was very important prior to extraction. A further significant boost was found when agitation was applied, during that dwell time. Clearly the fibre and construction need to be considered; a wool Berber pile would not respond well to aggressive brushing whilst a low profile commercial carpet is an ideal candidate for brushing, often using a machine. Because these techniques so influence the result, it is important that all aspects are applied consistently over the surface. The technician’s effort, product, temperature and agitation must all be used consistently to produce an even result so the use of machinery, where appropriate, can provide consistent effort as machines don’t get tired but will continue to work effectively throughout the time taken to complete the task. Rotary machines with a maximum speed of 200 rpm are often used with a shower feed carpet shampoo brush and, or a bonnet. Hot water extraction machines can be equipped with the Roto-Vac that combines injection, extraction and agitation to give a great result. The latest development in this area is the Legend Machine, providing high volume and pressure of solution with controllable, rotary agitation to boost cleaning. In recent times, here in the UK we have seen an increase in the number of professional, domestic carpet cleaners using encapsulation on a regular basis, previously more the province of commercial cleaners. All use agitation, some are getting good results with textile bonnets and, if the carpet is suitable and the technician sufficiently experienced, agitation using a mild, hard floor pad is becoming popular.
